In February 2018 as part of my Masters degree we undertook research into rainforest conservation. We analysed the importance of pristine rainforests in Queensland, comparing them with regrowth rainforests in New South Wales where there was previous invasion by a Chinese plant which was originally planted for shade in paddocks, called Camphor Laurel. Luckily for us the New South Wales rainforests are fighting back and the weed is losing, but with the impacts caused by agricultural activities human intervention is also required to save the rainforests in New South Wales from this invasive weed. Rainforests are my favourite ecosystems and it was lovely to spend a whole week in the jungle which was so cooling and well shaded with the amazing birds, reptiles and mammals I got to see each day.
